Start Your Herbal Home Apothecary Without the Overwhelm

Starting a home apothecary can feel like a dream and a panic attack rolled into one. On the one hand, you want to feel empowered, natural, and self-reliant. On the other hand, there's a looming voice saying, "Do I need to buy a hundred herbs? Where do I even start?"

If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone.

I used to scroll through Pinterest seeing picture-perfect glass jars of herbs, neatly labeled and glowing in afternoon sunbeams like something out of a woodland cottagecore fantasy. Meanwhile, I had a half-used bag of chamomile shoved in the back of a kitchen drawer and zero idea what to do with it.

Let me save you some overwhelm. You don’t need to start big. You don’t need to know everything. You just need a simple system to get going—one that grows with you, not one that makes you feel like you’re already behind.

In this post, I’ll walk you through a grounded, beginner-friendly way to build your herbal home apothecary without wasting money, losing momentum, or burning out.

  • A no-stress plan to start (or restart) your herbal apothecary

  • 5 starter herbs to grow, forage, or buy

  • Encouragement to take your time and do it your way

Start Small & Stay Grounded-The "plan"!

You don’t need a full wall of mason jars to call it an apothecary. Your apothecary can live in a shoebox, a drawer, or a corner of a shelf. What matters is that it holds herbs and remedies you actually use.

Start with 3–5 herbs you feel curious about. Chamomile. Calendula. Lemon balm. Lavender. Maybe something for sleep, something for digestion, and something that just makes you smile.

You can always add more later. And you will, once you know what works for your body and your lifestyle.

The 5 Starter Herbs I Recommend
  1. Chamomile – gentle, calming, great for sleep and skin.

  2. Lemon Balm – uplifting, antiviral, kid-friendly.

  3. Lavender – versatile, aromatic, good for stress and minor burns.

  4. Calendula – skin-healing, beautiful, great for infused oils and salves.

  5. Peppermint – helps with headaches, digestion, and cooling off.

Need a place to buy beginner-friendly herbs? I can't recommend Azure Standard highly enough. Use my link to set up your account if you're curious about them. If you can't find the herbs from there or prefer Amazon, I love Anthony's brand and Micro-Ingredients.

These herbs are easy to grow, widely available, and have multiple uses. You can sip them in tea, infuse them in oil, or use them in baths or salves.

Storage Tips for Real Homes

Don’t worry if you don’t have matching jars and custom labels.

Here’s what I use:

  • Recycled glass spice jars or mason jars

  • Small IKEA baskets or a plastic drawer bin from Target

  • Masking tape + a Sharpie to label the date and name

Keep herbs in a cool, dark place away from heat and moisture. Think kitchen cupboard or pantry shelf.

Track What You Have & What You Use

Print the free apothecary tracker (linked above) and keep it somewhere handy. You’ll want to jot down:

  • What herbs you have

  • How you’ve stored them

  • When they were harvested or bought

  • What you’ve used them for so far

Bonus: This makes planning future blends and refills so much easier.

Go Slow. Go Real.

You don’t have to be an expert to be effective.

You can sip a homemade tea and soothe your nerves. You can rub a calendula salve on a scraped knee. You can grow lemon balm in a pot and feel like a little bit of magic lives in your backyard.

That’s the beauty of starting small and building an apothecary your way. It’s not about aesthetics or internet algorithms. It’s about reclaiming care—slow, steady, and season by season.
